eSIM Compatibility: Not Available on All Devices Yet
eSIM technology is relatively new, mostly adopted from 2020 onwards. This means smartphones made before then are unlikely to support eSIM and still use a removable physical SIM card.
Unfortunately, if you have an older device, you won’t be able to benefit from the cost-effective and high-quality data plans that eSIM offers for international travel. However, it’s worth checking, as there may be variations based on manufacturing dates and models.
Keep in mind that even some newer models might not include eSIM support yet. We highly recommend checking our updated list of supported models or following the instructions below.
How to Check eSIM Support for iPhone Users
Go to Settings > Cellular > SIM Applications (or a similar menu related to SIMs) > SIM Application/Add SIM or any option related to international data plans.
If you don’t see these settings on your iPhone, it’s likely your device does not support eSIM.
How to Check eSIM Support for Android Users
Go to Settings > Connections > SIM Manager/SIM Card Manager > eSIMs or Add eSIM.
If you can’t find these options on your Android device, it probably does not support eSIM.
How to Check eSIM Support on Other Devices
For devices like Xiaomi, Huawei, or Google OnePlus, if you can’t find the SIM menus, try dialing this code: ##606##.
If the screen displays EID (Embedded Identity Document), your device supports eSIM.
How to Activate an International eSIM
The great thing about eSIM is how easy it is to activate international data plans upon arrival at your destination. Here’s a step-by-step guide from selecting a plan to activation:
Purchase a Data Plan
It’s best to buy your data plan before you travel, while you’re still at home. However, since the eSIM activation process is quick, you can also purchase it while abroad using Wi-Fi. You can even buy it last minute if you’re on your way to the airport.
Complete Your Purchase and Join the Service
Once you’ve chosen a plan based on your travel destination, duration, and data needs, complete the purchase through a short online process.
You’ll receive an email with a QR code and instructions for activation. Follow these instructions when you’re ready to start using data at your destination.
Activate eSIM After Arrival
Scan the QR code with your phone’s camera or a barcode scanner app. Follow the activation instructions you received. After confirming the activation, a new eSIM will appear in your SIM menu. Select it, and you should be connected within 10 minutes, ready to use data until your plan expires.
How to Remove eSIM After Use
To remove the eSIM, go back to the same settings menu where you activated it. Select the eSIM you used abroad and choose “Remove Mobile Data” or “Remove eSIM.”
